A Small Freezer, a Frigidaire Ice Maker, and a Kaeser Compressor Emergency

It was 4:18 p.m. on a Thursday in March 2024. I had one foot out the shop door when the phone rang. The caller was an appliance repair shop owner named Dave. His voice had that tight, careful tone I've learned to recognize in emergency calls. 'My air compressor is down,' he said. 'The small freezer has to go out by Monday morning. I don't know what to do.'

I've been coordinating emergency service for compressed air systems for five years now. The Fix

The price was $1,275, plus $185 overnight freight, plus $400 for a local technician to drive it out and install it. Total: about $2,860. To Dave, that was a huge number. To the dealer, it was the smallest order they'd fill that week.

They treated it exactly like a $15,000 order. They didn't ask Dave to arrange his own freight. They didn't say they'd call back tomorrow. They sent a single tech in a service truck with the dryer strapped down in the back, and he arrived at 7:15 the next morning. The small freezer left Dave's shop at 6:50 a.m. Monday. He called me at 7:30 to say the café had passed inspection. The Frigidaire ice maker was back together by Tuesday, and the customer paid the rush fee without a single complaint because Dave was upfront about the cost.

A few weeks later, Dave sent me a photo of the new dryer running next to his compressor. He had written 'KAESER' on a strip of masking tape and stuck it to the cabinet. 'I want to remember this,' he said.

I think I know what he meant. It wasn't just that the compressor said Kaeser on it. It was that nobody treated him like a small customer. That is the part I try to keep in every emergency job, no matter the size of the order.

If they're not getting the same respect you'd give a production line, the emergency is already waiting for you.
