There's No 'Best' Kaeser System—Only the Right One for Your Situation

When I first started managing our compressed air procurement, I assumed there was one "best" Kaeser setup everyone should buy. The flagship Sigma Control system seemed like the obvious choice. Four years and a few painful budget overruns later, I realized the truth: the right system depends on your specific operational load, budget structure, and maintenance capacity.

So instead of telling you what to buy, I'll walk through three common scenarios I've encountered—and what worked (and didn't) in each.

Scenario A: High-Volume, Continuous Operation

This is the ideal use case for Kaeser's premium screw compressors. If your facility runs compressed air 16+ hours a day, the energy efficiency of the Sigma Control profile can save you real money—I'm talking $3,000–$5,000 annually on a typical 50–100 hp system (based on Q3 2024 energy rates).

What I'd recommend:

  • A Kaeser ASD series or similar rotary screw compressor with Sigma Control 2. The variable speed drive option is worth the premium if your load fluctuates.
  • Pair it with a Kaeser refrigerated air dryer—the TA series are workhorses. I've seen them run for 10+ years with minimal issues (note to self: replace the condensate drain annually).

    • If heavy fluctuations: Variable speed drive is worth it. If steady: Fixed speed is fine.
  3. What's your budget?
    • If under $25,000: Scenario C. Don't stretch—you'll regret the hidden costs. If over $40,000: Scenario A. If in between: Scenario B.

One last thing: whatever you choose, budget 10–15% of the total cost for maintenance over the first five years. I didn't do that for our first system—stupid mistake. (Lesson learned.)
