It Started With a Simple Email

Fifth: reference clients in your region. Not testimonials. Actual clients you can call. We now require at least two references from the same country or region. If a supplier can't provide that, they're either new to your market or they've had problems.

The Replacement Order—and What Went Right

We ended up buying from the second vendor—the one who quoted $22,000. Their machine arrived in October 2023. The factory acceptance test video they sent used our actual candy samples. The technician who came for installation spent two days on-site and left with a signed checklist covering every sensor, every tension setting, every operating parameter.

That machine has been running for over a year now. We've had exactly one unplanned downtime event—a film roll that didn't meet spec, which we caught in receiving. The manufacturer's after-sales team replied to our email within four hours and shipped a replacement sensor the same day.

Was it perfect? No. The manual was poorly translated and the touchscreen interface takes some getting used to. But the machine does what it's supposed to do, and when it doesn't, we get support.

The Industry Has Changed—But Not in the Way You'd Hope

The fundamentals haven't changed: you get what you pay for. But the execution has transformed. You can't just look at a spec sheet and a price. You have to look at the process, the people, and the track record.

The Checklist I Use Now

Here's what I run through before signing any purchase order for a candy packaging machine, cookie packaging machine, or any other flow wrapping equipment:

  1. Product compatibility test: Send samples. Get a video. Verify it's your product, not theirs.
  2. After-sales response time: Ask for their service level agreement in writing. If they don't have one, negotiate one.
  3. Reference calls: At least two clients in your region who bought the same model in the last 18 months.
  4. Factory audit: Virtual or in-person. See the assembly line for your model. Talk to the QC person.
  5. Spare parts list and pricing: Get it upfront. If a $200 sensor fails in month two and they want $800 for a replacement, you need to know that now.
  6. Total cost calculation: Machine + freight + customs + installation + training + first-year spares. Compare that number, not the sticker price.
